Storage Tips
Packing:
- Use good quality storage boxes
- Fill boxes to capacity, partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse
- Pack heavy items into small boxes so that they are easy to lift
- Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap, wrapping paper, or clothes
- Pack dishes and glasses in tissue paper or bubble wrap before storing
- Wrap pictures and mirrors in mirror boxes, labeled “fragile” and stand on end
- Use wardrobe boxes to store hanging clothes
- Clean garden equipment before storing
Storing:
- Inventory your stored items and keep the list in a safe place at home
- Label or number boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods
- Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good stacking base
- Store items a couple of inches away from the sides of the unit to aid ventilation
- Stack similar sized boxes together to maximize space
- Store items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door
- Do not place heavy items on soft furniture or mattresses
- Stack chairs seat to seat, separated by cloth or paper
- Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation
Things to be Cautious of:
- Do not store old paint, cleaning fluids, gasoline, and propane tanks etc…
- Make certain all fuel is drained or burned out of gasoline powered equipment.
- Throw away anything that could possibly cause fire.
- Wrap all furniture to avoid scratches
- Always place a protective cover such as fitted sheets over your soft furnishings and mattresses. Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust
- Do not store any food, spices, etc. or any item which could attract rodents or pests
- Remember, this is self-storage and it is wise to be over cautious when wrapping and transfering, storing your items
