Packing:

  • Use good quality storage boxes
  • Fill boxes to capacity, partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse
  • Pack heavy items into small boxes so that they are easy to lift
  • Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap, wrapping paper, or clothes
  • Pack dishes and glasses in tissue paper or bubble wrap before storing
  • Wrap pictures and mirrors in mirror boxes, labeled “fragile” and stand on end
  • Use wardrobe boxes to store hanging clothes
  • Clean garden equipment before storing

Storing:

  • Inventory your stored items and keep the list in a safe place at home
  • Label or number boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods
  • Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good stacking base
  • Store items a couple of inches away from the sides of the unit to aid ventilation
  • Stack similar sized boxes together to maximize space
  • Store items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door
  • Do not place heavy items on soft furniture or mattresses
  • Stack chairs seat to seat, separated by cloth or paper
  • Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation

Things to be Cautious of:

  • Do not store old paint, cleaning fluids, gasoline, and propane tanks etc…
  • Make certain all fuel is drained or burned out of gasoline powered equipment.

  • Always place a protective cover such as fitted sheets over your soft furnishings and mattresses. Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust
